After 24 years of doing prison time, the Humans of San Quentin brought freedom to my heart and soul on May 2nd with their recognition event celebrating us. I couldn’t believe something like this could be possible: cake, pizza, and amazing entertainment from creative, talented prisoners, singing, dancing and telling stories. I felt like we were all camping around a bonfire of beautiful energy! It was sad to see the event come to an end. I wish it could have gone on forever!

I look forward to these events because it’s all I have. Honestly, I daydream of sharing my life with that special someone. I’ve been feeling pretty lonely lately. I stay busy, and  I’m always on the move with my painting projects. I just completed a painted skateboard that would be sold and donated. The painting is one of a kind, a rose and sunflower seed, rising out of a grave, reaching towards the universe, a sea shell of stars and order of zodiacs. Thank you, Humans of San Quentin, for what you do for the people inside. Xoxo

These stories arrive by mail.

Every month, a physical envelope arrives at your door, postmarked from San Quentin Village, California. Inside, you will find original artwork, writing, and recipes from real contributors, along with a personal letter from me, Diane Kahn, founder of Humans of San Quentin, about the people who made them. You read it. You keep it.

Every piece comes from someone serving a sentence. Every piece reminds you they are so much more than that.
