My life is nothing but a story. Iโ€™m interested in sharing it with you.ย

I was born in East LA, and my twin brother and I had a tough start. We were placed in foster care, bouncing between homes and spending time in boysโ€™ homes. Growing up, we experienced abuse from both our father and stepmother, and eventually, we made the decision to run away. I have been in prison since 1990. I was 17 years old at the time, charged as an adult, I was sentenced to 18 to life for second degree murder. I was also from a gang. I know youโ€™ve probably heard stories like mine before, but Iโ€™ve recently finished writing a book about my life story. Iโ€™ve titled it Living in Darkness No More. My life is nothing but a story. Iโ€™m interested in sharing it with you.ย

I just had my board hearing on December 4th. Wow! I was denied and given another 18 months. My sentence is 18 years to life, and I really thought Iโ€™d be going home sooner. But Iโ€™m not complainingโ€”itโ€™s better than waiting 10 to 15 years.

My family has been there supporting me every step of the way, and that keeps me strong. I went into that room as a changed man, and the board members saw that. Iโ€™m not giving up because I know God has a plan for me. I also know my father is watching over me, and if he were here today, heโ€™d tell me, โ€œIโ€™m proud of you.โ€

To my fellow brothers and sisters serving time in prison, I just want to say: never give up on hope.

Sincerely,

Nate
