I’m no longer the same person I was when I came in. I now have the tools to love myself and be a better person.

I’m not really good with words, I’m still learning. Throughout my childhood, there were things that happened, things that never should have, that left me confused. At the age of 14, I started drinking. It felt like the only way to cope. I couldn’t tell anyone what I was going through, so I bottled it in, feeling rejected and misunderstood. That led me to make bad decisions. I hit rock bottom in 2016. I was arrested during one of the hardest times of my life, to the point where I didn’t want to live anymore. Back in that jail cell, I found a Bible. I started reading it. I prayed, and I started to follow Jesus. I’m clean and sober. I’m no longer the same person I was when I came in. I now have the tools to love myself and be a better person. Thank you for letting me share a little bit of my story.

These stories arrive by mail.

Every month, a physical envelope arrives at your door, postmarked from San Quentin Village, California. Inside, you will find original artwork, writing, and recipes from real contributors, along with a personal letter from me, Diane Kahn, founder of Humans of San Quentin, about the people who made them. You read it. You keep it.

Every piece comes from someone serving a sentence. Every piece reminds you they are so much more than that.
