Art is something I’ve found a passion for while doing my time. I didn’t have a lot of people helping me when I first came down so I had to figure out a way to make some money just to get something to eat. The food we get isn’t really filling so I started learning how to make cards. Then I began practicing drawing people. I taught myself. It’s funny I remember I used to draw my sister Kristina just to practice. I brought it out to the yard and asked one of my friends if it looked like the picture. He lied and said yeah. Thinking back on it, being honest, it really didn’t 😝 but I kept at it and thankfully I didn’t give up. Now I’m pretty good at it. I did these two portraits back in 2021. I actually love capturing someone’s picture with my pencil and showing how I see them through my eyes as an artist. It’s a way for me to do something productive when I’m stressed or feeling negative. I throw on some music and get to work. It’s also a way I can support myself and stay out of trouble while in prison. It’s an honest way to live and it brings me a lot of joy too. I just read your comments about doing portraits and / or art. I am currently working on a photobook to be published Spring2026..It contains photos from San Quentin 1975. My friend, Scottish singer Frankie Miller played for the prisoners back then. The journalist who attended gave me access to his review and over 100 photos to use.
