Longing to control time and failing to appreciate moments that could have been is not who we are. It is what happens when we forget to honor the present.

I drove to my parents’ home where Grandma was staying after open-heart surgery. I popped the trunk, cranked up Miles Davis and John Coltrane, and asked her to dance. Mama told me to be careful, and Grandma shushed her. I danced with her until she laughed so hard she peed. Mama hugged and kissed me, making me promise to save her a dance. Longing to control time and failing to appreciate moments that could have been is not who we are. It is what happens when we forget to honor the present. I recall the privilege of time now that Mama is gone, and I miss her beyond words. Perhaps today, you can enjoy yours. Say what you meant to say. Listen to someone without drawing thought bubbles. Dance with someone you love to celebrate a moment. I pray you rediscover this gift today.

Thank you for this opportunity.

Sincerely,

Emmanuel
