Christopher Blackwell introduces his book, “Ending Isolation: The Case Against Solitary Confinement

I want to share a few incredible things that have recently bloomed in my life. I was published in the New York Times last week alongside my friend Sarah Sax. Together, we co-wrote a piece on the brutal and unnecessary use of strip searches in prisons. This archaic and traumatic practice does little to prevent contraband and is rooted in the legacy of slavery. It’s a tool of control, not safety, and it must end. I hope the piece sparks dialogue and change. Next, I’m thrilled to share that my first book is now available for pre-order: Ending Isolation: The Case Against Solitary Confinement. Co-written with Law Professor Debbie Zalesne, Dr. Terry Kupers, incarcerated journalist Kwaneta Harris, and others, this book takes a deep dive into solitary confinement in America. We cover its history, the legal landscape, racial and gender disparities, and how solitary impacts youth and those with mental illness. Most importantly, we highlight the movement to end this cruel practice. The book will be part of a powerful national book and bus tour launching this September, stretching from Washington State to Washington DC. It’s a huge project that’s been over a year in the making, and one we hope will push this issue into the national spotlight. Lastly, my website has been rebuilt to better showcase the work I’m doing. I’ve also launched new platforms on Instagram (@christopherwblackwell) and Bluesky (@chriswblackwell). I’d love for you to follow, share, and let me know what you think. Thank you for your support, encouragement, and solidarity. I always love hearing your feedback about the work I’m honored to be part of. Together, we are dismantling systems of harm and building something better.
