In that moment, I found the strength and willingness to pursue my purpose in life. I was no longer afraid to face that person in the mirror.
I had an epiphany several years ago that had a lasting impact on how I live my life in prison and to this day! In my darkest time, I was eager and receptive to hear anything from my sponsor Ed V., who was trying to help me make sense of my dilemma. How did I go from a beautiful life, with a family and a successful career that I worked hard to obtain over the years, to incarceration?! Then, out of the blue, I received a letter from Ed, and four words immediately jumped out at me… “use your time wisely.” In that moment, I found the strength and willingness to pursue my purpose in life. I was no longer afraid to face that person in the mirror. I needed to drop the facade, dig deep from within, and heal! That empty void was now being filled with awareness from others, education, and the joy of helping others who suffered like me. I was able to ask for forgiveness from the people I had harmed, including myself. Today, it brings me comfort to replay Ed’s voice in my head: “use your time wisely,” as a reminder to stay focused and committed even in difficult circumstances.
