Being part of the experience, even from a distance, was incredibly moving.

Being locked up often leaves you feeling useless, but that changed for me when I could support my daughter as she gave birth to my first grandson. When she went into labor, I was on the phone with her the entire time, coaching her to push, breathe, and resting. Being part of the experience, even from a distance, was incredibly moving. It meant so much to be there for my daughter when she needed me, and it created a beautiful memory that she still brings up for laughs.

These stories arrive by mail.

Every month, a physical envelope arrives at your door, postmarked from San Quentin Village, California. Inside, you will find original artwork, writing, and recipes from real contributors, along with a personal letter from me, Diane Kahn, founder of Humans of San Quentin, about the people who made them. You read it. You keep it.

Every piece comes from someone serving a sentence. Every piece reminds you they are so much more than that.
