“A Human Me”

Hurt and fed up… 😞
Pity… Words stuck…
A mirror on the wall. Look… 👁️
I take “a pause”…
Fear! Oh my! Do I run?
Now! I have to face everything and recover.
Face Everything And Recover.
Push! Push! I tell my mind and spirit.
Praying for better days… 🙏
Never giving up.
Seeing things for what they are.
Time… I must experience it.
Life: Luxury_Immortal_Freedom_Exist.

As a poet, I want you and me to heal from trauma.
As a writer, I want my readers to ponder.
As a human, I wish humanity could fix hunger.
We are all mentally, emotionally, and spiritually hungry.
Hope. Motivate. Forgive. That is true serenity.
Making amends with the community…
I’m wondering if the wisdom from all of this will lead to empathy.

Imprisoned in my mind.
Imprisoned in my heart.
Imprisoned in my soul.
“Captive runs free” —> 🕊️
Wondering: If I roll a dice without numbers,
Will it tell me the chances in my life
That I’ll have peace, safety, and slumber?

Thank you for hearing me out.
Me, stepping toward a Hierarchy of Needs.

These stories arrive by mail.

Every month, a physical envelope arrives at your door, postmarked from San Quentin Village, California. Inside, you will find original artwork, writing, and recipes from real contributors, along with a personal letter from me, Diane Kahn, founder of Humans of San Quentin, about the people who made them. You read it. You keep it.

Every piece comes from someone serving a sentence. Every piece reminds you they are so much more than that.
