How can I help educate those around me so they can better understand why I exist?
“The Moment the Switch was Flipped” by Taina Rose
I am a proud member of The Red Rose Transgender Movement, which was created in 2009 as a first line of defense against transphobia, to build solidarity among transgender women, and to educate us not only in physical self-defense but also in the power of litigation. Growing up, I was conditioned to believe that in order to survive in prison, I had to be ready to use violence whenever I was threatened or misunderstood. As a proud Islander, trans activist, and author, that conditioning was put to the test the very first day I arrived. I was immediately targeted with transphobic verbal attacks and deliberate insults, including: “You need to get my money. You know your place, b—h!” Automatically, I reverted to my survival instincts, violence and self-preservation became my only focus. For 32 days, I lived in a state of heightened self-security. Then one day, something shifted. I had an awakening, a powerful moment of self-talk where I began to question: How can I help educate those around me so they can better understand why I exist? That moment inspired me to create something bigger than myself. I am inviting this forum, and your organization, to join me in creating a new space, a space where real dialogue can happen.
I want to open the door to questions from everyone, whether youโre transphobic, staff, or part of the LGBTQ+++ community.
We can talk about:
- Why does so much hatred exist?
- What confusions or concerns do people have about my choices?
- What fears might they carry?
- And why shouldnโt transgender women be included and embraced?
I propose we name this space “DEAR TAINA,” where I will answer questions, educate, and correct the many misconceptions about transgender women,ย how we came to exist, and why we are not here for mere pleasure or entertainment. We are human beings, deserving of dignity, respect, and understanding. Thank you for standing in solidarity with me,ย
Taina Rose
