Many incarcerated individuals are often remembered only for the worst things they’ve done, but this event reminded us of redemption, transformation, and rehabilitation, and that there are people who care about us, even if we have no one.

Thank you for the warm welcome at the recognition ceremony on May 2nd, 2024. Having the opportunity to post a heartfelt poem to my loved one on your organization’s social media website meant a lot to me. Humans of San Quentin gave me a platform to express my thoughts and feelings in a safe space for the world to see. For the first time in my life, I was able to bring tears to my loved one’s eyes when I asked her to visit the Humans of San Quentin page and see my Valentine’s Day post.

As I entered the large chapel B building where the ceremony was taking place, I couldn’t help but notice all the men and women in attendance. It was clear that Humans of San Quentin has positively impacted many lives, and they came out to show their appreciation. By giving a voice to the voiceless and allowing people to express their talents, poetry, recipes, and stories, the organization has made a significant difference. Many incarcerated individuals are often remembered only for the worst things they’ve done, but this event reminded us of redemption, transformation, and rehabilitation, and that there are people who care about us, even if we have no one.

Thank you for providing cake and pizza; the food was delicious. The cake reminded me of a birthday party, and I couldn’t wait to have another slice. I had the chance to meet many Humans of San Quentin staff members, and as expected, everyone was kind and polite. Diane, the founder, was gracious enough to take a picture with everyone who wanted one, even though it was getting warm inside. She promised to send us copies of the photos, and she kept her word; I received a beautiful, clear photo of us together within a few weeks. I shared that photo with my grandmother so she could see the positive things I’m doing.

I am grateful to Humans of San Quentin and their staff. I will continue to support the positive work they do and share the impact they have had on me and my loved one. Thank you for continuing the mission of changing the public’s perception of incarcerated people.

Thank you, HoSQ TEAM!
