These are the memories that have comforted and sustained me through my darkest days.

For many years before my mom, Judy, remarried my stepdad, Pastor Strossner, it was just the four of us: my mom, my older sister Danita, my little sister Danielle, and me.

I remember a family tradition my mom started every summer so we could enjoy ourselves, spend quality time together, visit our grandfather and two uncles, and explore all the fun, exciting places Southern California had to offer. We visited Disneyland, Universal Studios, Knottโ€™s Berry Farm, Six Flags Magic Mountain, Venice Beach, and countless other events and experiences that brought us so much joy, fun, and excitement.

Every Friday, after work, my mom would fry some chicken, fill the cooler with ice, juice, sodas, water, fruit, and a few sweetsโ€”all to save money on the long ride to my grandfatherโ€™s house in Long Beach, California. After just a couple hours of sleep, weโ€™d load up the car around midnight with our suitcases, books, and games to keep us kids occupied. Then, weโ€™d leave Oakland, California, and hop on the freeway. For the next six or seven hours, we had so much fun in the carโ€”bonding moments that helped create the everlasting love and close-knit family we are today. These are the memories that have comforted and sustained me through my darkest days.

Thank you, Momma!
