Tyler Bowman, an incarcerated writer serving three consecutive sentences in North Carolina, has always turned to writing as a source of purpose and comfort. It’s been his creative outlet and a way to navigate the challenges of incarceration. Whether working on an article, a novel, or a personal reflection, Tyler finds motivation in the possibilities his words can create—what if they inspire change, or resonate with readers on a deeper level?

His first published book, Legacy of Stars, marks a significant milestone in his journey as a writer. Tyler’s nonfiction has also been featured in Dollars & Sense magazine, and he is currently working on a new novel that promises to be a heartfelt and compelling story. Following that, he plans to focus on the sequel to Legacy of Stars. We’re excited to share his story and encourage readers to connect with his work as he continues to write with purpose and passion.

Every month, a physical envelope arrives at your door, postmarked from San Quentin Village, California. Inside, you will find original artwork, writing, and recipes from real contributors, along with a personal letter from me, Diane Kahn, founder of Humans of San Quentin, about the people who made them. You read it. You keep it.

Every piece comes from someone serving a sentence. Every piece reminds you they are so much more than that.
