It’s the actions and words that come my way, especially when they don’t match who I truly am, that cause conflict. Those are the falsified fabricators.

Common sense is having the ability to comprehend and understand the actions people display and the words they say to me. It’s about being mindful, considerate, and respectful of others until they give me a reason not to be. I don’t get upset for no reason. It’s the actions and words that come my way, especially when they don’t match who I truly am, that cause conflict. Those are the falsified fabricators. Common sense is knowing myself. It’s knowing who I am, what I stand for, what I’m capable of, and what I will and won’t accept in my life or around my family. It’s living with awareness, protecting myself and my loved ones from harm, and taking life seriously because I only get one shot. I am the star of my own movie, the author of my own book. It’s up to me how it plays out. Common sense means making home my top priority and setting positive goals for my family. It’s having tunnel vision for success, staying focused on my purpose, and remembering that every action brings a reaction, good or bad. It’s valuing my life by not wasting it, being a leader, and climbing my mountain of success without letting anyone or anything stop me. I won’t postpone my mission. The world is my stage, so I perform to my fullest.

These stories arrive by mail.

Every month, a physical envelope arrives at your door, postmarked from San Quentin Village, California. Inside, you will find original artwork, writing, and recipes from real contributors, along with a personal letter from me, Diane Kahn, founder of Humans of San Quentin, about the people who made them. You read it. You keep it.

Every piece comes from someone serving a sentence. Every piece reminds you they are so much more than that.
