I am a writer.ย I wrote two books while in here, one is an urban crime thriller titled Remain Silent and the other is a book of poetry titled the Belly of the Beast. After my release, the first time, I was able to self-publish both books under my own publishing company . My journey has transformed the indictments of my past into a testimony, unfortunately I find myself incarcerated once again for a parole violation. However, everything happens for a reason and this incarceration has led me to discover Humans of San Quentin.
Here are two poems Iโd like to share:
A million friends
Some will claim to have a million friends
That’s impressive, yes, but that depends.
Because one alone is rich indeed.
But a man with no one will never breed.
A friendly face with a jealous mind
Which makes a friend so hard to find.
Some hare foes amongst their friends
Who never chose to make amends
They pledge allegiance that always breaks
Within your circle just watch for snakes
Because a friend for life who took a vow
May have changed his mind and hates you now
A million friends is a million regrets
And a broken oath that trust forgets
And though my enemies remain adverse
I have seen best of friends who have ended worse
Yet, I travel through the night beyond
A lonely path of a broken bond
And upon this road all I found were foes
During times of grief no friends arose
So I would rather have not a single friend,
Then have a million who just pretend.
A soldier cries
I heard a story once before
That told a soldier never cries
He has never known the fears of war
Nor felt a tear upon his eyes
A fearless heart is obsolete
A story told I can’t accept
A soldier cries without deceit
A tearless face that never wept
The fears within he is known to keep
Before his tears his blood will shed
Though I believe he will never weep
I still believe he will cry instead
A courage built without a doubt
The strength inside I can’t deny
But what this ode’s in fact about
A soldier cries, I will tell you why
A shout will echo loud and clear
A soldier voice to no surprise
Yet, the only sounds you will ever hear
Are piercing sounds of battle cries
