When I was outside, I focused on material things, even with my children, Flash and Jasmin, and my ex-wife, who meant everything to me. Despite this, I felt empty. But everything changed in prison. Thanks to volunteers and people who have shown me that happiness comes from appreciating the small things in life, like a smile, I’ve learned to enjoy what I have and not worry about what I lack. Yes, freedom is important, but I’ve realized I have to start from the inside out. Today, I smile more, especially when I play pickleball. I know I cannot change my past, but my present feels hopeful, and my future looks brighter because of the kindness and compassion I’ve received. I am not alone behind these walls.
